Position Summary

As a Play & Learning Educator, you will engage participants of all ages in educational and entertaining STEAM (science, Engineering, Arts, and Technology) performances and programming at the museum and throughout Kentucky. You will be trained by our Play & Learning team to deliver STEAM curriculum and facilitate activities at the museum, schools, and organizations. You will act as a representative of LCM working directly with school/organization staff and local volunteers to ensure that program participants have an engaging and educational experience. 

In this role you will primarily focus on STEAM enrichment that takes place at the museum. Your role includes live presentations of enrichments for classes, maintenance and coordination of supplies, logistics, customer service, and set-up and clean-up of programs/enrichments. You may also facilitate STEAM programming outside of the Lexington Children’s Museum.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Present STEAM content in a variety of formats, including:
  • Fieldtrip Enrichments: 20-45 minutes in length, includes supplies, and audio-visual components; typically presented to groups of 25 or more participants, usually 2-5 presentations back-to-back.
  • Walk-Up Activities: tabletop hands-on STEAM activities presented in a short, 4-6-minute format to small groups of 10 or fewer participants.
  • Off-Site Enrichments: 30-60 minutes in length, includes supplies; typically presented to groups of 25 or more participants, usually 2-5 presentations back-to-back.
  • Act as representative of the LCM in off-site locations, consistently embodying and demonstrating LCM values and executing its mission.
  • Engage with the public in a positive and friendly manner and communicate directly with program organizers, coordinators, and participants.
  • Travel to various schools/organizations and facilitate educational activities with participants of all ages
  • Set up and put away on and off-site enrichments and Walk-Up Activities, including lifting and carrying supply bins, loading/unloading supply bins, and setting up components of programs.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Play & Learning Director.

 

 

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent, some college coursework or college graduate preferred.
  • Experience in education, science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, or related disciplines in an academic, professional, or volunteer capacity.
  • Experience working with kindergarten through 8 grade students (K-8) in an academic, professional, or volunteer capacity preferred.
  • Comfortable working with the public and committed to providing excellent customer service, experience in customer service or other public-facing roles preferred.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, able to follow directions, able to work independently.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and able to drive throughout Kentucky.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical duties such as lifting, reaching, pulling, and pushing.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to travel and work some evenings and weekends including overnight stays (very rare).
  • Availability includes at least 2 full weekdays (available 9-4), 3 preferred.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Maintain a fun, safe, clean, & welcoming museum environment by providing support and continually striving to meet customer needs and improve the visitor experience, while following Museum procedures and expectations.
  • Greet and welcome adults and children, engage in conversation, and accurately answer guest questions regarding all aspects of the Museum.
  • Provide excellent guest service at the front desk, on the phone, and by email.
  • Open and close the museum.
  • Open and close the cash register, cash box, and complete the nightly deposit.
  • Maintain an organized, tidy reception area.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all membership, programming, special events and exhibits.
  • Support membership sales, including active selling, taking payment and data entry.
  • Assist with birthday party reservations and birthday party payments.
  • Support Gift Shop including cashiering, stocking, cleaning, and merchandising.
  • Check Welcome & Admissions emails daily and forward/sort them appropriately.
  • Perform routine facility janitorial duties, ensuring cleanliness of Museum.
  • Receive and sort deliveries.
  • Participate in off-site educational or promotional opportunities, as assigned.
  • Assist in training new employees, as assigned.
  • Support Museum Experience staff, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and evening shifts.
  • Should have reliable transportation.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Engage with guests visiting the museum, including but not limited to facilitating exhibits, facilitating educational programs, facilitating birthday parties and birthday party activities, following Museum procedures and expectations.
  • Provide a fun, safe, and efficient experience for Birthday Parties. Including, but not limited to, prepping activities, prepping rooms, checking trash, dispersing party favor passes, etc.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, welcoming museum environment.
  • Participate in off-site educational or promotional opportunities, as assigned.
  • Provide excellent guest service throughout the museum.
  • Open and close exhibits properly, ensuring exhibits are in proper condition for safety and function.
  • Perform routine exhibit up-keep, and janitorial duties, ensuring cleanliness of exhibits and galleries.
  • Assist in training new employees, as assigned.
  • Support Guest Experience staff and the front desk, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
